Quantum System Architect

Permanent employee, Full-time · Delft

Your mission
Qblox is looking for a quantum system architect to help us design the next-generation control stacks for quantum computers and quantum networks. These quantum control stacks generate the analog signals needed for the control and readout of quantum bits. The signals have frequencies spanning the range from DC to the microwave regime and need to have extremely low noise, temperature drift and interference. To reach these analog properties as well as stringent timing criteria in quantum computing, signals are generated using networks of high-end FPGAs connected to high-speed data converters. To generate the sequence of required pulses, we designed implemented the Q1, a classical CPU with a custom instruction set that is able to operate in a hard real-time fashion with nanosecond precision. On top of this hardware stack we run a software stack that is responsible of taking user defined quantum circuits and compile them to the Q1ASM, our assembly language that can be executed on the Q1 processor.

Our products are used by world leading research institutes and companies around the globe in their effort to build industrial scale quantum computers. As a quantum system architect, it is your responsibility to help design the next generation of products and features, aimed to operate quantum computers in operational HPC environments. Next to this, we expect you to design optimal integrations between various technical domains. You will work closely with the other system architects, roadmap leaders and various engineering teams to guarantee that the system will be engineered according to the architecture you specify. Lastly, you will play an important role in the process of protecting our inventions using patents by identifying innovative ideas and (co-)writing patent applications.
Your profile
  • Master degree and/or PhD in (quantum) computer science or electrical engineering
  • Experience with various quantum computing architectures and technologies is a plus (but not a hard requirement)
  • Ability to document things in a structured way
Experience with at least two or more topics from the following list:
  • CPU architectures, compilers and assemblers
  • Python, C and C++ programming
  • System engineering
  • Hard real-time systems
  • RF electronics
  • High-speed digital electronics (CPU/FPGA/…)
  • Digital signal processing
Competencies:
  • Ability to work effectively across functional boundaries: influence and inspire throughout the company;
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills: generates and pursues positive ideas to diminish the conflict situation and enhance relationships;
  • Technical skills: ability to understand high-tech electronics development and its requirements
  • Excellent organizational planning and time management skills:effectively identifies and adjust key priorities and timelines;
  • Highly effective communication skills: uses a highly effective communication style that engages others and builds credibility and trust with a variety of audiences outside and across the organization;
  • Pays attention to detail and feels personally responsible and accountable for the quality delivered;
  • Decision-making: able to make decisions in situations of uncertainty or ambiguity. Weighs up various alternatives with speed and confidence, when making both routine and complex decisions.
  • Team work: makes suggestions, provides necessary resources, or removes barriers to facilitate the accomplishment of team goals;
  • Adaptivity and stress tolerance: recognizes changing circumstances and can identify what adjustments need to be made to plans, goals, strategies and ways of working;
